This is an example of "don't judge a book by its cover." Of the 3 hotels we stayed at in the Italian Alps/Valle D'Aosta, it was the simplest. However because of the warmth and hospitality, understated yet very deep, shown by the owner, I would return to this hotel time and time again. From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly and offered beverages. We chose the location because you can walk to the cable car station that leads to Aiguille de Midi on the French side of the Alps. We were glad to avoid the annoyance of having a car in Courmayeur and staying instead in Entreves. The half-board requirement ended up being wonderful, because we experienced the cuisine, from soup to nuts, so to speak in the Alps. The food is served family-style for your group. The owner was very accommodating with my being vegetarian. I ate wonderful, local secondi piatti. On an anticipated rainy day, he offered a suggestion to go to Chamonix in France. Sensing we were not enthusiastic, he showed us a photo book with an Alpine lake (gorgeous photo used by the tourist bureau); we said yes. He supplied the directions to Lago D'Arpy. We were overwhelmed by the beauty of the whole aquatic complex: lake, small lakes off of it, vernal pools, streams from a waterfall and trails connecting all of them. We were there for hours enthralled with the beauty of it. There were info boards about the Alpine newt - and then we saw numerous examples, including frogs and tadpoles. Without the owner approaching us, we would have missed this glorious experience.
I wish we didn't have to drive a car there. Possibly it can be arranged, by bus from Courmayeur and a bus ride to the town to another bus to Lago D'Arpy.

If you would like to appreciate skiing, mountaineering, hot-spur (terme), regional meal, vines, good view, fresh air, and avoid the clouds of International Tourism, Courmayuer is one of the best choice. And the hotel Aigle has quite kind and simple staffs.
